In 1861, Yantai opened its gates as a treaty port. One after another, countries like Britain, France, the United States and Denmark set up their consulates here. It became a meeting point where Chinese and Western cultures intertwined, and where the piano first found its way to Yantai. Schools soon introduced piano classes, sowing the seeds for a new generation of musicians. These courses would go on to nurture countless piano virtuosos for New China, their talents taking root in this coastal city. For over a century, the melody of the piano has lingered in Yantai’s air, unbroken and ever-resonant. It is a sound that has woven itself into the city’s fabric — and for many, it has been a force that reshaped their destinies, one note at a time.
